Sporting Surprises

One of the things I love about sport is its unpredictable nature. Three surprises come readily to mind from the weekend.

I went to bed last night convinced that Gaston Gaudio, who I tipped to win the men's single French Open tennis when he swept Lleyton Hewitt aside in the quarter-finals, was on his way to defeat. He was 6-0 5-1 down and, for me, sleep seemed a good option. "It'll be a good comeback from here", were my parting words to my wife and son, who were determined to watch it until the end.

This morning, as I was still half asleep, my wife asked me who I thought had won. "Coria", I replied with certainty. "How many sets?", she asked. "Three", I responded. "Well, you'd be wrong! Gaudio won in five!"

Then there was the footy. That's Australian Football. When I submitted my tips for this round I certainly didn't predict that yesterday the Sydney Swans would thrash St Kilda, who were previously unbeaten, having won their first ten games straight.

And on a personal note, I was pleasantly surprised to find enough golf form to win the B grade monthly medal at Wyong!

Go the Swannies! I felt an upset was in order, and was so confident that when I got there a mate and I were prepared to put a lazy tenner on the Swans - but the TAB was closed! BUMMER!!! At least I got my tip (and got to watch ;-)

Oskar played at half-time as well which was fun. In Auskick, tackling is meant to be illegal, but no-one tells the kids the get to umpire these games. Oskar was a defender, and this opposition kid came running around him - Oskar tried to get in front, but only managed to, well, tackle him. Despite looking sheepish, the umpire spread his arms and the holding the ball free kick went his way to his great bemusement.
