Graham Hamilton on "Evolving the Java Platform"

A new JVM instruction providing direct virtual machine support for dynamic languages such as Python and Groovy. That's one of the features we can look forward to in J2SE 7.0 (Dolphin) in late 2007, according to Graham Hamilton, a vice-president and fellow within the Java platform team at Sun.

Graham's article in the SD Times gives a good overview of some of the features to be included in J2SE 6.0 (Mustang), J2SE 7.0 (Dolphin) and J2EE 5.0.

Much of the discussion about J2EE focuses on JAX-RPC and how it "is being greatly simplified in J2EE 5.0 by the use of Java language annotations to specify the definition and use of Web services." Cross-platform interoperability between J2EE JAX-RPC and .NET applications using Microsoft Indigo is presented as a key goal.

As always, it will be interesting to see how the future of Java actually takes shape over the next few years.
