Jazz Venues in the Sydney CBD?

Jazz in the Sydney CBD? basement.jpg

Where does one go to find it?

There was a time when I could reliably go to The Basement and know that I would find excellent Australian jazz. Back in the days when the Galapagos Duck was at their peak. The Basement is still where it used to be at 29 Reiby Place but jazz no longer features on their gig guide. A quick look at their list for this month shows only one or two gigs that could be described as jazz.

So where are the good jazz haunts in the Sydney CBD these days? Or at least not too far from the CBD? Google doesn't reveal much.

A friend recommended Wine Banq - their gigs for this month look promising - but I suspect an expensive meal would accompany one's enjoyment of the music.

What I'm looking for is somewhere to have an inexpensive meal, catch up with friends and listen to some good jazz. Something like the Soup Plus used to offer. I know they had problems with their new venue; something like their old haunt would be fine in my humble opinion.

Any suggestions?

Hello Keith
I came by your site not by Gooling but by Dogpile which i have been using for years. Yes where is "The basement" and where is "Soup plus" for that matter, I cannot get at their web page any more and the last time I went to Sydney there were only about eight people and the trio did not even show up. When the basement closed for a bit during the construction of the new building there opened a place in King street and that too was in a basement, they served beer from all over the world, forgot it's name. I live in the bush now and I find it difficult to get info as I have lost contact. Yes if only.
