Wanted: Real Cricket!

Thank goodness that's over!

Now, comfortable in the knowledge that the Sydney Grade Cricket season has started, I can look forward to the middle of next month when the competition that used to be called the Sheffield Shield will start. And then, more comfortingly still, this Australian season's Test Matches against Sri Lanka and India will begin.

Call me old-fashioned but I can't take this new 20 Twenty stuff too seriously. On the other hand, if it was the more traditional annual Maitland ten-over comp (in which I recall playing in the 1980s), that would be different!

No Pokies at Souths

South Sydney may be out of the running for the NRL premiership but their co-owners are leading the way in the social responsibility stakes.

This morning the news comes that whilst the NSW government is allowing gambling to spread further from clubs to pubs, Russell Crowe and Peter Holmes a Court have requested that the Souths Leagues Club reopen in 2008 without poker machines.

As the recent ABC Four Corners program showed, gambling on poker machines in NSW has had tragic consequences. Hopefully the Souths board will back this bold initiative to show that clubs can be profitable and socially responsible.

Meet, Share, Learn about Rails

As the Ruby on Rails Oceania site says, it's a chance to meet, share and learn. Tonight's Sydney meetup promises to be no exception with presentations lined up from Tim Lucas, Lachie Cox and Dave Bolton. And, of course - in keeping with the group's theme - there will be ample opportunities to happily share experiences about Rails over a beer. Newcomers are welcome!

Mariners Top the A-League

Everyone loves a winner!

In my case, I can feel my support for the Central Coast Mariners strengthening after their second win of the new A-League season. Indeed, after two rounds, my local football team is the only team to have won. Remarkably, all the other six games have ended in draws.

I think I'll just have to go along to the Central Coast Stadium and watch the next home game, on Sunday 23rd September against Perth. Go the Mariners!
